Rally to protest the closure of Fessenheim

A strictly political decision

The date has been set. The nuclear power plant in Fessenheim will be shut down. That’s a fact. It’s not being closed because it’s too old, or too dangerous. This is a strictly political and circumstantial decision, made in a few days and without any consultation.

Let there be no rewriting of history. If Fessenheim is to be a symbol, let it be that of the negligence of a few politicians of the interests of a whole nation.

Fessenheim’s closure will bring an increase of 6 to 12 Mt of CO2 emissions per year (for comparison, in 2018 the emissions of all domestic flights in France amounted to 5 Mt of CO2. Source: Ministry of Ecological and Solidarity Transition).

Since the end of 2019, there has been a succession of permanent shutdowns in Europe: Mühleberg in Switzerland, Ringhals 2 in Sweden, Philippsburg 2 in Germany, and now Fessenheim in France, even though emissions in Europe are not falling or falling only slightly, and grid operators are warning of the consequences of the serial closures of these dispatchable capacities.

Whether you want to protest against this act of climate vandalism, the unravelling of energy independence and security of supply in France and Europe, the wasting of a longstanding and profitable generating capacity, or to show your solidarity with professionals in the sector, come and join us at Fessenheim on February 22.

On February 22nd, let us gather to defend
